To be an ethical brand taking a responsible approach to materials and the planet whilst helping to strengthen women’s role in society.
Louise Jackson, The Jacksons London
The beautiful and durable hand-crafted jute “word-bags” from The Jacksons are a joyous outcome of the design collaboration between Louise and the skilful handicraft workers in south-west Bangladesh. The partnership began in 2012 and The Jacksons are now working closely with over 3000 women in Bangladesh in an area where there are few job opportunities for them. We are doing more than just designing and creating a brand: we are striving to help overcome poverty and improve the women’s social standing. They now have access to free medical care and schools through this dynamic collaboration. Our ladies are paid directly which gives them independence and status, empowering them to make decisions within the family. A large percentage are educating their daughters up to sixth form and some are going to university. This was impossible only six years ago and Louise visits regularly to see at first hand the real benefits.
The Jacksons’ great friend, Gretchen of the Lacquer Chest on Kensington Church Street, introduced us to a man who had worked as a VSO in Bangladesh and together we made one jute bag in 2012. It has now become a joyous design collaboration between The Jacksons’ and the skilful handicraft workers in south-west Bangladesh, creating not only the beautiful and durable hand-crafted jute “word-bags” but also humorous and colourful placemats and beaded purses.
We have grown from a workforce of less than 100 women to over 1000 artisans in South West Bangladesh, an area where there are few job opportunities for them. We are also working with small communities of artisans in other parts of Bangladesh. All of these teams are predominantly made up of women, who are paid directly giving them independence and status, empowering them to make decisions within the family.
This is helping The Jackson’s fulfil a mission close to their hearts - to create as many job opportunities as possible.
